Racing: Fourth Great Western Steeples for Thompson

Trainer Kelly Thompson won the Great Western Steeplechase for the fourth time when Lautenschlager was successful at Riverton yesterday.

Joanne Rathbone, who rode Lautenschlager, won the 100th Great Western on No Hero in 2006. She bounced back yesterday from a fall in the Great Western Hurdles when riding Jacobs River.

It was the second steeplechase win for Lautenschlager from three starts over country.

The Forensic Evidence-Sophie Ro gelding has also won three hurdles races and seven on the flat for owner Glennis Munro.

Lautenschlager had won the Great Western Hurdles the two previous years.

Thompson also won the Western steeplechase with Belsen's Bank (1983), Possum Canyon (1996) and Kakapuka last year.

Omakau trainer Murray Hamilton had mixed fortunes yesterday. He won the Great Western Hurdles with Kid Columbus and a flat race with Deceptive, but the latter badly injured a hind leg during an incident when being swabbed.

He escaped and cleared a gate.

"It is pretty serious and he may have to be put down. We will not know until the morning," Hamilton said last night.

Deceptive had been booked to accompany Kid Columbus to Australia. Kid Columbus will now join other members of the Hamilton stable at Geelong.

Cee Gee Jay won the maiden hurdles when having his first start in that role.

Neko, who transferred to Invercargill trainer Sean Bellew after his previous start five weeks ago, won yesterday.

The sale to clients of the stable was confirmed after his win. Neko had his other win at Omakau in January, 2011 for owners Eric Parr and Hec Anderton when trained by Terry Kennedy.

Black Caviar maintained her unbeaten record in 21 starts in the group one The Goodwood at Morphettville on Saturday, AAP reports.

She won easily by a length and a-half after jockey Luke Nolen took her to the front early.

Neither Nolen nor trainer Peter Moody were concerned she did not win by a big margin.

"She was never out of second gear," Nolen said.

"Luke looked after her," Moody said.

Black Caviar is booked to leave for England on June 7.

Her next planned start is the group one Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot on June 23.

Moody won the Rough Habit Plate at Doomben on Saturday with Brambles, who is now in contention for the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm on June 9.
