Racing: Final to Smoken Up

Smoken Up completed a clean sweep of the Interdominion series in the $800,000 final for pacers at Alexandra Park last night.

Smoken Up, trained and driven by Victorian horseman Lance Justice, had won his two heats.

He emulated Elsu (2005) and Young Quinn (1975), who both went through Auckland series unbeaten.

Justice had previously tasted Interdominion success in a trotters' final with Uncle Petrika in Adelaide in 2007.

He took Smoken Up to the front near the 1200m last night and held out Themightyquinn by three-quarters of a length with a similar margin to Blacks A Fake, a four-time winner from six starts in Interdominion finals. Smiling Shard took his stake earnings beyond $1 million when fourth.

Smoken Up was bred in New Zealand. He is by Tinted Cloud and the first foal of the unraced Carnlough Bay, by Camtastic. He won twice from 10 starts as a 4yr-old from the Cambridge stable of John and David Butcher before he was bought by clients of the Justice stable.

Smoken Up has won 47 races from 92 starts and $2,639,102 in stakes.

Mark Purdon landed his fifth Interdominion Final when he trained and drove I Can Doosit in the $250,000 finale for trotters last night.

Purdon (46) drove Mark Hanover to win the final for pacers at Auckland in 1991. He has won the final for trotters as a trainer with Pride Of Petite in Melbourne in 1996 and Adelaide in 1997, and Buster Hanover in Sydney in 1998. He drove Pride Of Petite in her 1996 win.

I Can Doosit is raced by the Breckon racing syndicate, which bred the son of Muscles Yankee-Sheezadoosie.

The principal of the syndicate is Ken Breckon, former vice-president of the Auckland Trotting Club. The ATC made Alexandra Park available to the NZ Metropolitan Trotting Club to stage the Interdominion following the earthquake in Christchurch.

I Can Doosit was to have been offered for sale as a yearling, but he was retained after sustaining an injury in a fence. The gelding has now won 15 races from 29 starts and $425,729.

Sheezadoosie won seven races for Breckon and his brother, Peter, who died seven years ago. The brothers entered racing with Megaera, who won eight races and $225,000 in the late 1990s when trained by Purdon.

I Can Doosit outfinished the favourite, Let Me Thru, to win by a neck in 3.23 for the 2700m (mobile), 0.4sec outside the record he set in December in the Lyell Creek Stakes.

Purdon trained Highview Tommy to win the Interdominion consolation last night. He has Russley Rascal, Hands Christian and Living The Dream engaged at Menangle tonight. He drives the trio.

The Purdon-trained Sleepy Tripp was scratched from the pacers' final due to a muscular problem. Purdon had to withdraw Auckland Reactor from the Interdominion but the entire has made a good recovery from colitis-X and will be spelled.

Annicka became the first European-trained horse to win at Interdominion level when successful in the consolation for trotters. The Swedish mare, trained and driven by Jorgen Westholm, should be a major force in the Rowe Cup on May 6.
