Racing: Doyle off Great Northern ride

Shannon Doyle is ruled out of riding High Season in the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie today after sustaining concussion in a race fall at Washdyke yesterday.

High Season, the winner of eight hurdles races, including the 2009 Grand National, was pulled up in the Northern last year. He fell in the 2009 race.

Doyle was riding Hop Honor, who fell near the 600m in the hurdles yesterday.

Hop Honor injured a knee.

Cheap Date became unbalanced on the home turn when Magic Man shifted out. Magic Man reacted to the riderless Hop Honor.

Dane Ruler, winner of the steeplechase yesterday, saw his connections given a warning over his racing manners. The judicial report stated that he shied at the second last fence, forcing Misisipi Moonshine through the wing. Gary Walsh was dislodged from Misisipi Moonshine. He attempted to remount the horse to complete the course but his action was ruled out by a stipendiary steward. Walsh had blood on his face and he was considered unfit to ride.

Murray Hamilton, the trainer of Misisipi Moonshine, sought to protest against Dane Ruler, but this was ruled out by the stewards on the grounds that a protest can only be lodged if a horse has been placed.

Dane Ruler and General Mac were the only horses to complete the course in a five horse field. Guananjuato dislodged rider Andy Webb and Tedriffic dislodged rider Chad Ormsby.

Kylie Williams was taken to Timaru Hospital with an eye injury after she rode Montina Diva, who was pulled up at the 800m in race 10.

Williams was awaiting medical attention last night for a likely cornea abrasion to her right eye.

"A clod hit me and smashed my goggles," she said.

Ashley McKay was suspended from today until midnight on September 24 for careless riding in race 7. McKay defended the charge that she had shifted in when riding Son He Will, causing checks to Copper Tap and Oliver Lady.
