Blazin n Cullen, winner of three of his four starts this season, is poised to extend his winning record in a five-horse field at Addington tonight.

The 3yr-old colt, trained by Robert Dunn, has gained his three wins at Addington, the most recent on September 7. He was badly checked at the 600m in his other race this season.

Blazin N Cullen is raced by Ian Dobson, of Christchurch, who paid $160,000 for the Christian Cullen-Rye Hanover colt at the 2011 premier yearling sale.

Blazin N Cullen, offered by Platinum Breeding Ltd, was the top-priced lot at the sale.

Platinum Breeding, operated by Sarah Crawford, then of Ohoka and now at Morrinsville, had bought Rye Hanover after the mare came to New Zealand from the United States.

Dobson had bought a half-brother by Artsplace to Blazin N Cullen as a weanling. The colt was shaping well as a 2yr-old in the stable of Mark Purdon and Grant Payne at the time of the 2011 sale. The 2yr-old was Rockin Roll Lad, who ran third in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton at his first start. He won a heat of the Sires' Stakes at Forbury Park at his next attempt.

Dobson took his partner Janice Burnett, Noel and Wendy Kennard and Daryl Brown into the ownership to race Rockin Roll Lad, who was transferred to the stable of Cran Dalgety as a 3yr-old.

Rockin Roll Lad has gone from strength to strength, winning another eight races, including his last three.

Five of his wins have been at Forbury Park.

Rockin Roll Lad and Blazin N Cullen are the first two New Zealand foals of of Rye Hanover, a half-sister by Western Hanover to Rocknroll Hanover, winner of 15 races and $U2,754,000 in stakes.

He took mile records of 1.49.8 at 2 and 1.48.6 at 3. Another half-brother, Royalflush Hanover, won 39 races and $US2,153,000.

Rye Hanover is a sister to good winners Red River Hanover, Richess Hanover and Rustler Hanover.

Rye Hanover had left five foals in the United States, including three winners, when she was sold at auction to Dennis Thompson, of Christchurch.

"I was in Canada when she was sold for $650,000," Dobson recalled.

Rye Hanover is now owned by Peter Chambers, of Australia.

Christian Cullen, the five-time leading New Zealand sire, owned by Dobson, has made his mark in the United States from his only crop of foals there.

He has been represented by 2yr-old winners Good Day Mate (colt) and Handsoffmycupcake (filly) in $US200,000 races in Pennsylvania.

"He [Christian Cullen] only served 26 mares in America and he has had 13 foals to race," Dobson said.
