Bothamley (23) began riding over jumps at Riccarton on Friday.
He was the replacement yesterday for Tom Hazlett, who sustained a broken nose and facial abrasions in a race fall at Hastings on Saturday.
He required stitches above a cheekbone.
"I was eating fish and chips on Saturday night when Ellis [Winsloe, the trainer] phoned and asked if I would ride Not In The Avenues," Bothamley, said.
Not In The Avenues attended the pacemaker Torrent and came clear over the closing stages to win by three and a-quarter lengths.
The Forensic Evidence gelding is trained by Winsloe for Dennis and Christine Cairns, of Otapiri Gorge.
• Nicholman won the steeplechase by 31 and a-half lengths yesterday in his first race over country.
He raced handy, shared the lead at the 1800m and went clear at the third last fence.
Co-trainer Shane Anderton indicated Nicholman would have another race over country in preparation for the Grand National Hurdles.
Ian Nichol, said his mother Isobel (82), of Mosgiel, would be delighted with the win.
She races the 8yr-old with the estate of her husband, Tom, and Brian and Lorraine Anderton.
Sharp Prick posted his fourth successive win over hurdles when he mastered 69kg.
"We are looking forward to some good weather for the big races," Ben Calder, his Ryal Bush owner, said.
Calder and his wife, Karen, race Sharp Prick with a friend Winsome Dormer, of Christchurch.

He was aided by being in the first race yesterday.
Sharp Prick was ridden by Chad Ormsby, who won the open steeplechase on Honour Victory.
The 19-year-old Ormsby has won 11 races over jumps in 12 months.
Ormsby, an apprentice who is on loan to Jim Pender at Tauranga, won two races over jumps and two on the flat at Riccarton on June 5.
Ormsby has ridden Honour Victory in three successive steeples wins for the Balcairn stable of John and Karen Parsons, who prepare the Victory Dance gelding for Peter Lyon, of Alexandra.
Dan Moran was scratched from the open steeples yesterday due to an abscess on his left front heel.
