Racing: Auckland foray fruitful for Howard

Murray Howard drove his first winner for three and a-half years when he teamed with the 2yr-old Bit Of A Legend at Alexandra Park yesterday.

Bit Of A Legend is among four horses Howard has in his care for his employer, Cran Dalgety.

He took the drive yesterday when Dexter Dunn decided against making the trip.

Dunn drove five winners from six drives at Addington on Friday night, taking his tally for the season to 194 and stakes tally to $2,021,476 when he added $27,035.

Howard, who was having only his third race drive for the season, did not have a drive last season.

His previous driving win was The Drunken Drummer at Orari in November, 2008.

He trained The Drunken Drummer to win four races.

Bit Of A Legend, Chanelle Bromac and Onlyforyou are now headed to Victoria for the Breeders Crown series.

Stablemate Texican, a heat winner at Addington this month, is not making the trip, his owners deciding against it.

• Best Deal Yet easily won the $A100,000 Queensland Derby at Albion Park on Saturday when his Melbourne owners Merv and Meg Butterworth also won the Sunshine Sprint with Motu Crusader.

Both horses were bought out of Southland stables.

Best Deal Yet had a first-up win at Wyndham in December from three starts for breeder Martyn Fairbairn and trainer Kirk Larsen.

The Bettor's Delight-Bonnie Deal gelding has since won eight races and $133,000 from the Mark Purdon stable.

He won the Gold Coast Derby and Premier's Cup on the Gold Coast at his two previous starts.

Natalie Rasmussen has been the driver each time.

Best Deal Yet rated 1.58.5 for the 2680m (mobile) on Saturday.

Purdon has also won the New Zealand Derby (Fly Like An Eagle) and New South Wales Derby (Smolda) this season.

Motu Crusader has won 10 races and more than $100,000 since joining the Queensland stable of John McCarthy 13 months ago.

The son of Courage Under Fire-Silksngems, bred by Motu Lodge, won four races including a Sires Stakes heat for 3yr-olds at Forbury Park in 2009 when trained by Tim White, who raced him with Doug McLeish.

Motu Crusader rated 1.53.2 in the $60,000 race over 1660m (mobile) on Saturday night.

The Butterworths have won more than 100 races this season.
