Owners ‘rapt’ after shock win

Omakau trainers Michael and Nikki White bagged their first quinella when Mrs Gee Eye held out Wentworth to win race 4 at Waimate yesterday.

Mrs Gee Eye rocked punters with her gritty win at $30-to-one odds on the rain-affected Waimate track.

The 4yr-old Gallant Guru mare was at even juicier $80-to-one odds in fixed odds markets.

The victory was a pleasant surprise for the Whites, who had higher hopes for their consistent $9 chance, Wentworth.

"It was awesome. We are totally rapt. It makes it all worthwhile," Nikki White said.

"We actually expected Wentworth to win, not her."

Mrs Gee Eye emerged the winner for 3kg claiming apprentice Kin Kwo in a driving finish with Wentworth winding home late to grab second.

The winner was well beaten in her two starts before yesterday’s victory, but both were on unsuitable ground, White said.

"The two runs she has had were on firm tracks, which didn’t help. We just put her up in distance and gave her a bit more ground.

"The loose track helped as well and so did the light jockey."

The Whites are in just the second season of their training partnership and yesterday’s win was their second career victory.

Twoznotenough was fit and ready to win yesterday’s Waimate Cup, despite not having raced since early last month.

Rider Terry Moseley stalked the leaders on Twoznotenough before they fought out an epic home-straight battle with runners-up King’s Pal and Tina Comignaghi.

The Les and Richard Didham-trained galloper showed grit to dig deep and win in his first start since running fifth behind Fascinate in the listed Easter Stakes at Riccarton.

The trainers also won yesterday’s feature sprint race when Fairlight took out the r90 1200m event.
