Riccarton filly Miss Federer was crowned South Island 2yr-old of the year less than 24 hours before she won the listed Canterbury Belle Stakes on her home track on Saturday.
Rider Kylie Williams took the Andrew Carston-trained filly straight to the lead in the 1200m feature, and she fought determinedly to win by a neck over runner-up All About Magic.
Carston was full of praise for his rider after her tactics paid off.
''Kylie did a super job, as she had a plan before the race and she executed it perfectly,'' the trainer said.
''She did start to get a little tired at the end, but she had done a bit to get to the front so that was to be expected.''
Miss Federer added Saturday's listed event win to the group 3 Woburn Farm Classic she already had on her impressive resume.
The filly will target next month's group 3 Barnswood Farm Stakes before a decision is made on whether she tackles the group 1 One Thousand Guineas at the New Zealand Cup Carnival.
''People have asked me if she will get the 1600m of the One Thousand Guineas and the simple answer is I just don't know,'' Carston said.
''She has a nomination for the race and that is our target, but whether she gets there or not will be up to her recovery from today and how she goes when we step her up over more ground.
''As long as she comes through this well, I will give her a month between runs and have a crack at the Barnswood Farm Stakes at Ashburton in mid-October.''
