Victory in tomorrow's group 1 Livamol Classic with Savvy Coup would start an incredible journey for Michael Pitman.

The 4yr-old will start a short-priced favourite in the 2000m weight-for-age feature for Pitman, who trains the Savabeel mare at Yaldhurst with son Matthew.

Savvy Coup shot to favouritism after running a slashing second behind Melody Belle in last month's group 1 Windsor Park Plate over 1600m on the same track.

Victory in tomorrow's event would set off an extraordinary sequence of events for Michael Pitman. Firstly, it would allow the trainer to confirm flight arrangements for Savvy Coup to travel to Melbourne for the Cox Plate to take on Winx.

"She is booked to go but she would have to win to go over there," Pitman said.

"Her goal is the Matriarch Stakes on the last day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

"It might sound silly but she would need a race leading in to that and the perfect race just happens to be a 2000m race at Moonee Valley.

"Of course, we would be realistic about our chances, but it would be a massive honour to have a horse in the Cox Plate."

If Pitman is to saddle up his mare on Cox Plate day he is going to have to overcome a massive personal obstacle.

The trainer has been undergoing treatment for bowel cancer and will undergo surgery to remove a portion of his bowel on Monday.

Savvy Coup's Livamol Classic rival Scott Base was nominated for the Cox Plate but has since been withdrawn.

He has the Mackinnon Stakes on his agenda instead and would boost his chances of going to Melbourne for that race should he win tomorrow.

Scott Base finished seventh in the Windsor Park Plate, but Johno Benner, who trains the horse with Holly Wynyard, said the horse deserved to finish higher up the placings.

"He's been a victim of the way the track has played on the first two days and he's cost himself by being a bit tardy coming from the barriers. It's been no fault of Vinnie's [jockey Vinnie Colgan] but he hasn't been able to get clear at the right time.

"I'm very happy with Scott Base. You can never underestimate what he's capable of. I've had unwavering faith in this horse and I think he can win, even with Savvy Coup in the field.

"He's a class act and I'm absolutely thrilled with the work he's had. He's moving great and looks terrific. He's absolutely primed for Saturday."

Top jockey Opie Bosson, who has been out of the saddle because of weight issues, will return at the Hastings meeting.

He rides Our Abbadean in the Livamol Classic.

Bosson credits his return to riding weight to the encouragement of David Ellis, the boss of Te Akau Racing.

"After Melody Belle won on the first day at Hastings, I met with Dave and we sat down and sorted out a programme," Bosson said.

"So now I'm riding trackwork then working out with a personal trainer and then working on the farm during the day. I'm eating properly and I've lost 10 kilos from that first day. I'm feeling really good." - additional reporting NZ Racing Desk
