McCullum looks to go big

Gore galloper Accidental Offside will shoot for a hat-trick of wins in today's Central Otago Summer Cup.

One man hoping Accidental Offside will not score big is Otago-born cricketer Brendon McCullum.

McCullum, currently playing in the Big Bash T20 league for the Brisbane Heat, starts Nevis in the race

under his Vermair Racing Ltd banner.

The Irish-bred galloper is arguably as well-travelled as his owner, starting his career in his country of birth before being exported to Australia and then New Zealand.

His stablemate Nowhere Man looks one of the horses to beat in today's race.

The galloper may have a big seven-kilogram weight advantage over Accidental Offside.

The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained galloper looks perfectly weighted in the race with 54 kg.

His in-form rider, Kavish Chowdhoory, could bring the horse's impost down to 51kg if he claims his full allowance.

Accidental Offside will carry 58kg in tomorrow's event with rider Chris Johnson aboard.

The galloper has a proven record of winning with big weights, having previously won with 60kg.

Accidental Offside will also be aiming to keep his unbeaten record on the Omakau track intact in the $25,000 feature.

The galloper looks a big chance of doing that, following two recent open handicap sprinting wins for trainer Ellis Winsloe.

He is one of several horses in today's Central Otago Summer Cup that thrive at Omakau.

Defending champion Shaara won his only start at the Omakau track in the race last year.

Fellow Ascot Park galloper Secret Power has won two of his three starts at the venue, and Wingatui sprinter Passito placed in her only start there.
