Tomahawk horseman Ali Malcolmson has retired from driving after a 40-year career in the sulky.

He is one of Otago's most successful drivers with 399 career victories.

''I think it is time to hang it up,'' he said.

''You have got to be out there all of the time.

''I have got a lot of nice memories, that is for sure.

''I have had a lot of nice horses and a lot of good owners. It has been a good ride.''

Malcolmson's best wins came in some of the South Island's most prestigious races for young pacers.

He trained and drove Vita Man to win the Flying Stakes in 1981. The horse, bred and raced by the late Ray Anicich, helped kick-start his professional training and driving career.

''When I first started out Vita Man and Our One, they sort of set me alight. They were very good horses.''

In the early days, Ray Anicich had one or two nice horses he gave me to train and I was lucky.

I got two trips to Australia with his horses.

Our One won 10 races and started in two Rowe Cups and two Dominion Handicaps.

Malcolmson drove Seafield Inca to win the 1989 Sapling Stakes and the 1990 Southern Supremacy Stakes for Dunedin trainer Kevin Court.

He also drove Rarest to win the Kindergarten Stakes in 1991 for late trainers Henry Skinner and Alan Devery.

Malcolmson was one of the first drivers to test the newly installed track lights at Forbury Park in 1961.

''Times have changed, tracks have changed and carts have changed.''

''I don't know about these new carts with these wee tiny foot-rests and you are sat way up in the air. They take a bit of getting used to.''

The veteran will continue to train a small team of horses and drive them in workouts.

Malcolmson has four horses set to start training including a promising Auckland Reactor 4yr-old.

His latest runner, French Desire, has been retired to stud.
