Local trainer Ellis Winsloe and rider Samantha Wynne look a key combination to follow at today's Gore meeting.

Their first runner is Thought That in race 6, today's sprinting feature over 1355m.

The 6-yr-old hit the line with purpose in his fresh-up run for fourth at Winton on October 15 and steps to a distance closer to his optimum range today.

''I was very happy with him and hopefully he will improve off that because he was quite bullish that day and blew hard after the race,'' Winsloe said.

''This race is still on the short side for him, but I would not put it past him, because he does have a bit of class.''

Rival Showemup, the third favourite for today's race, was just a head in front of Thought That in the Winton race.

The effort looked below Showemup's usual high standards, but today she has the aid of Kin Kwo's 3kg claim.

Thought That was rated a $3.30 equal favourite with Te Akau galloper Astrid when TAB bookmakers' markets opened yesterday.

Astrid, to be ridden by Shankar Muniandy, finished second-last in her season opener after never getting into a tricky Timaru affair, won by Don Carlo.

Winsloe and Wynne combine with Consolidate in today's feature middle-distance event, race 3.

Though the horse is rated the market outsider and will be racing fresh-up over 2000m, Wynne is not rating her or any of Winsloe's horses off as winning chances.

''Ellis has a very good team in and I am very grateful he was been very loyal to me. His horses find another leg around Gore,'' the Canterbury rider said.

Veteran Southland stayer Motorboat Mike was rated a $3.80 favourite on market opening.

The eight-horse race features a host of winning prospects including Odi Et Amo, Sureasyouwereborn and Shantav

Wynne also rides solid chances in Smokem Up (race 2), Night Lady (race 4) and Knutquacker (race 5) for Winsloe.

Moyrabella (race 9) looms as the best of her rides for other trainers - in this case, Terri Rae.

The Scott Laming pair of Our Royal (race 1) and Larundel (race 8) also rate highly, Wynne said.
