Breast cancer fundraiser race getting bigger

Wingatui may be looking even more pink this Queen's Birthday weekend as the Otago Racing Club looks to build on the success of last year's Think Pink race day.

The inaugural fundraising event, held in conjunction with a race meeting, raised about $7000 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, but club events and marketing manager Charlotte Neilson has five figures firmly in her sights.

''We will get to the $10,000 mark,'' Ms Neilson said.

''Graeme Clydesdale from ABC Business Sales has already raised $3000 alone, so we'll get there.''

Auctions, raffles, donations from tickets and fundraising from riders in the charity riders ''Oaks'' last year provided the lion's share of the $7000 last year, and ticket sales for the $70 luncheon have already exceeded the 2014 total.

Last year, it was around 130 [diners] and this year we're already at 170 - so we'll get to our 250 mark pretty quick,'' she said.

''We've improved the menu on last year - we've changed a few things and incorporated a Sunday roast, with it being a Sunday and a long weekend.

''The first year round was a bit of a trial and error and see how we go.

''This year, we've got More FM on board and they're pushing the event for us.''

The charity riders race proved popular last year, attracting 10 riders, and 14 riders - who could be former trials riders or regular trackwork riders - are expected to saddle up this year.

The club has raised the fundraising bar for the riders this year, who will each have to raise a minimum of $500 to take part.

Riders from Otago and Southland are taking part, and Ms Neilson said the quality should be pretty strong.

''Everybody rides trackwork, so everyone's got experience - safety first is the way it goes.''

The club will again approach leading South Island jockey Chris Johnson to take part in the Oaks.

Johnson competed last year wearing the pink breeches he wore when winning aboard Natuzzi in Melbourne last April.

Tickets for the luncheon are available from the club's website - www.wingatui.co.nz.
