The pacer, who shares the same name as a former 15 race-winning greyhound, scored in his first start for trainers Greg and Nina Hope when winning race 7.
The 5yr-old had not been sighted since putting in two below-par performances at Manawatu in March for trainer Stephen Doody.
He was then sent to the Hope stable to be beach trained.
"He has had a problem with sore feet, so the beach training has helped him," Greg Hope said.
"He is a nice enough horse, without being a superstar.
"We were reasonably confident he would go a good race today. He had been trialling up good and we thought the Oamaru track being a bit softer would suit him."
The next month looks to be an exciting time for the Hope team.
They will take their star trotters Monbet and Enghien for a private workout at Rangiora this week.
How they train will decide how far the pair are from hitting the trials track.
"We will take them into Rangiora this week and give them a bit of a bowl up," Hope said.
"Everything is going well with them so far."
Enghien has not raced at all in the current season.
The 5yr-old last started when fifth behind Habibi Inta at the Harness Jewels in June of 2018.
The trotter developed a minor leg problem after returning to work to prepare for his 5yr-old season and was given an extended spell to get over it.
Monbet had just one start this season when running eighth at Addington in March.
That race was his first since winning the Dominion at the same track in November of 2016.
The 7yr-old developed a splint bone problem after that race, which ruled him out of the open-class features for the rest of the season.
Should Monbet and Enghien continue to progress well in the coming weeks, they will be aimed at the Ordeal Trotting Cup at Addington in September.
