Tairei's Ricky Welsford enhanced his reputation by claiming the most scientific junior title and the best performance in the freestyle category at the National Wrestling Championships in Mosgiel on Friday and Saturday.

Welsford won the 60kg junior class titles in both freestyle and Graeco-Roman style and stepped up in class to win the senior freestyle title.

Combat Sports Otago team member Jessica Todd also had an outstanding tournament, winning the 65kg and 65-70kg freestyle in the 14-16 age group.

Her team-mate Bianca Keane won the 56kg and 60kg freestyle titles in the same age group.

Todd also won the freestyle 63kg title in the junior class.

Taieri Amateur Wrestling Club president Brian Isaac said about 120 athletes competed during the two-day tournament. Taieri and Combat Sports Otago dominated the medal count.
