Temwa Chileshe was all smiles after he unexpectedly beat older brother Lwamba in the open men’s final at the Wanaka Squash Club’s Queen’s Birthday tournament on Sunday night.

The Hamilton-based New Zealand men’s doubles representatives have been in Central Otago over the past week coaching juniors, connecting with local clubs and visiting family.

Both men progressed easily through the field and about 60 spectators crowded into the squash club to watch the final.

Lwamba (23) is seeded No2 in New Zealand and Temwa (21) is No3. They will represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Temwa rarely beats his older brother in singles, although they train, compete and travel to tournaments together.

"Thanks Lewy for the final. That was fun. And thanks to Ollie [Johnston] who I played in the semifinal. That was also fun," Temwa Chileshe said.

The winner of the women’s open was Lowri Waugh, and Tracey Flay was runner-up.

Other winners were Hamish Dudley (men’s A grade), Hayley Green (women’s A grade), Mike Collett (men’s B grade), Emily Phillips (women’s B grade), George Gibson (men’s C grade), Craig Crockett (men’s D grade) and Kyan Prince (men’s E grade).
