Team shows keen touch

Kaikorai Valley College will make its third trip in as many years to the national touch championships next month.

The school will be the sole Otago mixed team at the event, which is being held at Palmerston North from December 12 to 14.

The side came third at the South Island championships earlier this year, qualifying to go to the national championships.

South Otago High School also qualified for the championships but has decided not to travel to the event.

Kaikorai Valley College co-coach Karina Nafatali said the 14-strong squad had been training hard as competition would be intense this year.

The team did not make the semifinals in its two previous visits to the national championships.

Mixed touch teams consist of six players, with equal numbers of males and females.

A match is 40min and played in halves. There are 16 teams in the mixed grade, split into two pools.

Queen Elizabeth College, from Palmerston North, won the mixed grade last year.

The Kaikorai squad numbers 14, including Matt Brown and Shaun Dungey who have been in the squad for the past three years.

Tyron Pelasio (14), an up-and-coming player, has been selected for a junior New Zealand touch squad.

The side is also coached by Damien Burden.
