Dunedin's young softballers are in for a treat this weekend.

Black Sox great Thomas Makea and New Zealand player of the year Tyron Bartorillo will lead a clinic for players 18 and under.

The pair will be in Dunedin with the ELE Papanui Tigers to contest the Waterloo Classic, which  begins on Saturday afternoon.

The duo will spend Saturday morning coaching at Ellis Park.

The clinic is free and Otago Softball chairwoman Sandy Wallace said it was a wonderful opportunity for aspiring players to learn from the best.

"The message we want to get through to the kids is this is an opportunity not to be missed," Wallace said.

"This is a coup for Otago Softball to get players of this calibre in the city."

Makea, who won four world titles before retiring in 2013, coaches the Junior Black Sox, while Tyron Bartorillo is a three-time world champion and has represented both New Zealand and Australia. The Papanui Tigers travelling team boasts some of the country’s best softballers, including New Zealand emerging player of the year, Reilly Makea, Wallace said.

"I can’t remember the last time we had a team of this calibre playing in a tournament in Dunedin."

There are two grades in the Waterloo Classic. In the men’s grade, the Papanui Tigers will face competition from local clubs Dodgers and Ellis Park as well as a King’s Old Boys team.

There are four teams in the mixed grade — Dodgers, Spartans, Immortalz and Greenbacks.
