Squash: Stars of the future take to the courts

One hundred players to get through 150 games in three Central Otago towns, all within 28 hours - that was the challenge faced by the organisers of the Otago District Junior Squash Championship at the weekend.

The Alexandra Squash Club hosted the event, which was also the final round in the five-tournament Junior Highlander series, and attracted the biggest field of entries in the series.

Courts in Alexandra, Omakau and Cromwell were used.

"It's gone extremely well, especially considering it was the biggest field of entries we've had.

Getting through 150 matches in that time and playing in three different venues was quite a challenge but it's all gone very smoothly," Squash Otago executive officer Aynsley Munro said.

The Highlander series was held in Otago and Southland to foster the sport at junior level, with three rounds in Otago and two in Southland.

"We've had 140 young people playing over the five tournaments and 28 of them have been at all five rounds," she said.

Tournament controller Dave Saunders, of Alexandra, said 64 boys and 36 girls took part at the weekend, with gradings ranging from B1 to J5.

Chris van der Salm (15, Excelsior club, Oamaru) won the junior men's title at the Otago junior championships and Cara Raal (17, Logan Park club) won the junior women's title.

She also won the Highlander series, with Ben Smail (Southland) second and Jack Harris, Reuben Fisher and Mason Stevens, all of Otago, equal third.
