Wet, wet, wet.
Heavy rain in Dunedin this week has caused havoc with the sporting calendar, forcing most events to be cancelled today.
Dunedin City Council parks and reserves team leader Martin Thompson said the only option was a mass cancellation of sport in the city.
"There are still games going ahead but they are only ones that are essential to the competition.
"Obviously we've had probably more than 100m of rain and it's been very heavy in the last 24 to 48 hours.
"All grounds have got surface water. We've tried to concentrate on better-draining grounds like Bayfield, Kettle, Hancock and Tahuna. That's basically the situation."
Soccersouth acting general manager Wilson James thought Dunedin grounds were the wettest he had seen in six or seven years.
All football has been cancelled with one notable exception: the Caversham-Queenstown premier league clash would be too difficult to reschedule, James said.
All junior rugby is off and many non-essential games in higher grades have also been canned.
In North Otago, the Citizens Shield semifinal between Oamaru teams Athletic and Excelsior has to be played at Ngapara as all Waitaki District Council grounds are unavailable.
