It is the night of nights for the University of Otago's most exclusive sporting club and, by the end of it, there will be a champion of the century.
The university is holding its 100th Blues awards tonight to honour its top sporting students and has invited 150 guests to a function at the University of Otago Link.
Former All Black halfback Chris Laidlaw and Olympic bronze medallist Lorraine Moller, both previous Blues recipients, are the guest speakers.
The Otago University Students Association has been calling for votes through its website to name the top sportsperson of the last 100 years, and the winner will be revealed tonight.
Among the higher-profile Blues are All Blacks Laidlaw, David Kirk, John Timu and Anton Oliver, Olympic 1500m gold medallist Jack Lovelock, Silver Ferns Lesley Nicol, Belinda Colling and Anna Scarlett, swimmer Liz van Welie, and Wanganui Mayor, radio personality and former MP Michael Laws, who was honoured for debating in 1981.
Awards presented include Blues for individual sporting achievements, club administrator awards, sports club of the year, Maori sportsperson of the year and Otago University sportsperson of the year.
