Sports awards: Awards to recognise top Central athletes

Central Otago's top athletes will be recognised at a function in Cromwell on April 17, to be attended by New Zealand surf lifesaving great Cory Hutchings.

It will be a family affair for the cycling Williamsons of Alexandra, with siblings Sophie (15) and Patrick (18) named as finalists in junior categories and older brother James (20) a finalist in the senior men's category.

James is a third-year student at the University of Otago, Patrick is in his first year at Canterbury University and younger sister Sophie attends Dunstan High School.

All represented New Zealand in their age groups last year.

However, Patrick and Sophie will not be at the awards because they will be at national selection races in the North Island.

Another set of siblings vying for honours are Wanaka free-skiers Jossi (18) and Byron (17) Wells, who are finalists in the junior men's category.

For the first time, a Roll of Honour has been introduced for outstanding junior athletes who narrowly missed selection as finalists.

The Wells' younger brother, Beau James (13), has been included on this list.

One award has already been announced - the John Fitzharris Trophy for services to sport.

This has been awarded to Russell Mills, of Alexandra, for the development of rowing in Central Otago and at Dunstan High School.
