Club softball games between Invercargill and Dunedin teams may continue in the new year, Otago Softball development manager Michael Coutts says.

Senior softball is battling on despite dropping to two teams this season.

In a bid to introduce more competition for Dunedin's leading players, Otago Softball has forged a relationship with Southland Softball in which club teams from the two cities will play crossover games against each other in a pre-Christmas competition.

Two Invercargill teams made the trip north to Dunedin in the weekend and dominated, winning three of the four matches.

Demons Blue thrashed Dodgers 18-5 but lost to Cardinals 8-6. Demons Red beat Dodgers 6-1 and Cardinals 9-1.

Coutts said the new format has been received well.

''I think everyone is generally pretty pleased with how the draw has panned out,'' he said.

''It has given all teams a bit of variety, especially for our teams. It gives them different faces to pitch against.''

The format will be reviewed when it concludes this weekend. Following that a decision will be made whether to continue with the arrangement in the new year.

''After it has been reviewed we might look at doing it again in the new year - we just have to see how it plays out. But generally the feedback has been positive.''
