Snowsports: Events scheduled for Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak will host a series of race events before the inaugural Winter Games in August.

The skifield will host the alpine racing events, big air and closing ceremony of the Winter Games, the southern hemisphere's largest wintersports event, acting as a precursor to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Manager Hamish McCrostie said Coronet had been working with the Winter Games group to provide a "first-class race environment" for some of the best alpine skiers in the world.

Richard Murphy, head of race and events at the skifield, said his immediate focus was on the first race at Coronet Peak this year, the junior interfield series starting on July 18 for athletes aged 5-14.

"This is a great introduction to ski racing for the young ones who will compete in a giant slalom format," Murphy said.

The Winter Classic race series will begin on July 21, catering for serious and social competitors.

The series involves masters, professionals, serious and social classes in dual slalom and giant slalom events.

Murphy said the Winter Classic attracted local and seasonal skiers, not all of whom had ski racing backgrounds.

"This is one of the most popular race events on the ski racing calendar.

"It caters for all types of ski racer - it's competitive but it also has a social element to it."

The New Zealand ski masters, to be held on August 7 and 8 for competitors aged 30 and above, will feature a downhill race, a slalom and a giant slalom.

From August 19-22, the Southern Cup Japanese FIS series is expected to draw a strong field in the lead-up to the Winter Olympics.

The event includes four days of racing, comprising two days of giant slalom and two days of slalom.

The national ski championships will be the final race event of the season, and will include the giant slalom on September 4 and the slalom on September 5.

Murphy said he also expected the event to attract a strong field of New Zealanders competing for a title with an eye on the Winter Olympics.

"We've got excellent race conditions at Coronet Peak and we're really excited about this year's events."
