NEV win women’s pairs

Some of Dunedin’s top bowlers shone in champion of champions events at the weekend.

In the women’s pairs, the experienced North East Valley combination of Ange Francis and Vicki Robinson overcame the relatively inexperienced Mornington duo of Mary-Lee Rolleston-King and Hilary Bissett 20-12 at Forbury Park.

At St Clair, there was a heavyweight battle between Kaikorai and Forbury Park in the men’s final. It was a second title in as many weeks for Nigel Birkbeck and Jonty Horwell, overcoming Roger Stevens and Andy Callender 19-14.

Both winning teams head to the national finals in August, the women to Auckland and the men to Hamilton.

On Sunday, the champion of champions singles took place in wet conditions.

At Kaikorai, Martin Kreft (St Clair) picked up his second title of the season, beating Paul Nicholls (St Kilda) 21-16. He now heads to Auckland in July for the national finals.

Kreft’s partner in their open mixed pairs win earlier in the season, Ruth Williams (St Clair), will try to emulate his win when she takes on Lee Grigg (Green Island) in the women’s final at North East Valley on Saturday. — APL
