Invercargill mountain biker Reon Carroll set the standard, winning both the Otago single speed championship and the Otago cross-country championship titles at the weekend.
The events were held at Naseby, with the single speed championship on 6.3km course on Saturday and the cross-country event yesterday, over a 8.5km track.
"It was what I would describe as an 'old school' cross-country course, with lots of bumps, and you had to be pretty competent to cope with it," Mountain Biking Otago cross-country co-ordinator Craig Bates said.
"There was a bit of technicality involved. It was a true championship course."
He said Carroll rode a single-speed bike on both days " which was a marvellous effort."
Forty-three riders, most from Otago, took part in the cross-country.
The events were revived last year, after a lapse of several years, Bates said.
The Otago junior championships were also at Naseby on Saturday.
"We've got a good band of club juniors coming through and these events give them something to aim at, and reward the top riders."
