It was a historic day for the Otago Riot at Logan Park on Saturday.
The region’s Australian Rules team picked up the first win in its six-year history, beating the Christchurch Bulldogs 93-65. It was an impressive result against Canterbury’s top club side, which won its local competition comfortably and was in Dunedin for the first time since 1998.
Things started well for Otago, as it took advantage of the wind to shoot out to a 20 point lead at the end of the first quarter. Three early goals set the tone as Otago dominated the quarter and ensured Christchurch had few scoring opportunities. Christchurch fought back in the second quarter, with the wind at its backs, but was unable to overhaul Otago’s lead. Otago extended the margin when the teams turned around again after halftime, proving too good despite a strong finish from Christchurch.
Sam Browne and Scott van den Bosch were key on defence for Otago, while Tom Bekkers dominated the bounce. Dan Benny had a strong game in the midfield, kicking several goals, as did Logan Toomer up front.
The result leaves Otago in a good position heading into the NPC in Wellington on December 10 and 11. Having battled at the competition in the past, the Otago team looks to have developed into a competitive side. Regular trips to Christchurch and holding on to its players helped build experience in the team, leaving it quietly confident as it prepares to head away.
