The Dunedin made film The King in the Ring is available to purchase or rent in Australia and New Zealand on the website Vimeo.
The film stars Wilbur McDougall as he battles to return to the wrestling ring and attempts to almost halve his weight through diet, exercise and gastric banding surgery.
Director J. Ollie Lucks said apart from a handful of private screenings earlier this year, it would be the first time the film was available to the public.
``It's significant because it will be the first time people in Dunedin will be able to see the film outside of the few sold screenings we had.''
``We got a lot of support not only from people in Dunedin but also the council.''
The film was funded by New Zealand on Air, the New Zealand Film Commission, Dunedin City Council and donations from the public.
McDougall's transformation had continued since the end of filming, Lucks said.
``He's continued to lose weight and now has a girlfriend, and his life has fully turned around, so it's turned out quite positive really.''
The next step was to look at releasing the film to a more international audience next year, Lucks said.
