Marwan Samy had to battle the odds as he claimed victory in the men’s singles at the Otago indoor open at the weekend.

Samy was seeded sixth for the tournament, but dispatched the third, first and second seeds on the way to his first title.

In the quarterfinals, Samy overpowered third seed Oliver Scott in straight sets.

The much-anticipated third quarterfinal between Hugo Barsby and Mathew Campbell led to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win for Barsby.

The semifinals then featured two contrasting matches.

Samy and Thomas Dai both blasted away from the baseline with their powerful groundstrokes. Dai claimed the first set, but Samy fought back to seal a 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 win.

In the other semifinal, Ryan Eggers and Barsby used their placement and slices to craft their points, Eggers’ experience in close matches guiding him to a 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-6(5) win.

Both Samy and Eggers were coming off mammoth semifinals, but the final still produced a high-quality match.

The first set was a tight contest as both players were getting accustomed to each other’s game. Samy was able to get a crucial break at the end of the first to win it 7-5.

The second set featured a valiant battle from Eggers, but Samy was able to win it and the match 7-5, 6-4.

On the women’s side, Charlie Byers was too strong for the competition as she won another Otago indoor title.

Byers took on Erin O’Neill in the final.

In the first set, Byers got out to a fast start, sweeping it 6-0.

The second set was a closer contest as O’Neill was able to use her backhand and slices to get into the match.

However, Byers showed her class and was able to prevail 6-0, 6-3.

Earlier in the tournament, O’Neill took out second seed Jenna Bowie in the semifinals, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.

Fourth seed Billie Fraser also had a close match with Miranda Mirosa in the quarterfinals, winning 2-6, 7-5, 7-6.

Campbell and Jaden Grinter claimed the men’s doubles title after beating Eggers and Gavin Mockford 7-5, 6-3.

Like the singles draw, both finalists had to get through a tight third set in the semifinals.

The women’s doubles champions were O’Neill and Bowie, who beat Megan Alexander and Sophie Stuart 5-7, 6-3, 10-6.
