And MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris said residents could expect similar driving conditions this morning — only, without snow.
"It’s going to be very frosty and it will be widespread across the regions as well.
"Because the snow has melted off during the day, there is a good chance it will leave the roads wet, and when that freezes overnight, there is potential that extra water could turn to black ice.
"It’s safe to assume that driving conditions could be a little bit challenging, so people should maybe take extra care and factor that in if they are driving to work or going about their days.
"Your journey will take longer."
Heavy snow falls in inland Otago yesterday prompted the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi to close State Highway 87 between Outram and Middlemarch, and The Pigroot (SH85) between Morrisons and Kyeburn for most of the morning, and chains were required to be carried on SH85 from Ranfurly to Alexandra because of the snow.

Drivers on SH8 were also warned to take extra care in the slippery conditions between Alexandra and Roxburgh.
While snow fell in the Dunedin hill suburbs, it did not cause any traffic disruption.
But on the higher reaches of the Dunedin-Waitati highway (SH1) at Leith Saddle, a traffic management truck rolled after slipping on snow and ice and partially blocked the road for a time.
Police said no-one was injured in the incident and there were no other serious incidents caused by the roading conditions yesterday.
Mr Ferris said the weather was expected to warm up again at the end of the week, but it would come with another bout of wet weather.
"It does seem like most days have a bout of wet weather at the moment. But that’s spring for you."
