No 150: Dunedin Technical wins Chatham Cup (1999)
Three other Dunedin clubs - Seacliff, Northern and Dunedin City - had won the Chatham Cup, New Zealand football's answer to the FA Cup, before 1999.
But it is unlikely any managed the feat under quite as long odds as Dunedin Technical.
The club had dominated southern football during the 1990s and was a regular Chatham Cup contender.
But it was thrashed 5-0 by Auckland powerhouse Central United when it reached its first final in 1998.
Getting back to the final the following September was a fine effort, but most expected Technical to have no show against Waitakere.
"We thought we had a fighting chance but we weren't over-confident," Technical coach Roger Brooks recalled.
The result was a 4-0 win for Technical, a dramatic and shocking result, especially for those who doubted southern football's strength.
Graham Marshall, Jason Tee, Justin Flaws and Aaron Burgess scored for the Dunedin club, while Matt Maingay, Jeremy Seales and Ian Bell were other key performers.
