Erika Fairweather might be powered by chocolate muffins this Olympics.

The Dunedin swimmer has been tucking into the baked goods — with a side of healthy fruit — in the dining hall this week as she settles into life at the Olympic village in Paris.

"The chocolate muffins are a big hit in the swim team," Fairweather said.

"They were definitely on the menu yesterday for lunch and dinner — I don’t know if that’s good or not."

The world champion is delving into everything the Olympic experience has to offer, after being separated in bubbles at the Tokyo Olympics.

After a strong past year in the pool, picking up countless medals at the world cup series and the world championships, Fairweather is in a much better place than her last pinnacle event.

"I’ve had an amazing training block over the last 12 months.

"Even post-qualifying meets to now has been really good, so I’m really excited for racing."

Her Olympic campaign starts with a bang on Saturday in the 400m freestyle heat.

The event is tipped to be the one to watch with the return of stars Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky, who skipped the world championships earlier this year.

"The 400 free is always one that’s hyped up for the women," Fairweather said.

"We’ve got some of the most incredible athletes in the field in that one race, so I’m ready to give it a good crack."

But the big names do not change Fairweather’s mindset.

She has gained a wealth of international racing experience in the past few years and has grown as an athlete.

"The main part is focusing on your own race.

"You have your own 50m lane. It doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing.

"The only thing you can control is how you swim on the day."

Fairweather, who labelled the Paris La Defense Arena, where she will be competing, as "epic" after a visit this week, has a hefty schedule with the 400m, 200m, 800m and 4x200m freestyle.

She swims in the 400m heat at 9pm (NZ time) on Saturday and likely the final at 6.42am on Sunday.
