All younger brothers dream of one day surpassing their older brother.

It just so happens Wanaka freeskiers Nico Porteous (15) and older brother Miguel (18) are two of the best freeskiers in the world.

Earlier this month, Nico bested Miguel for the first time, winning the Australian New Zealand Cup men's halfpipe competition, but he is not letting it go to his head.

''I love competing against Miguel although he does usually tend to beat me, but it keeps me hungry and, honestly, I don't think I'll ever be better than him. He's so much better.''

While both brothers say they never want finish below the other, it is much easier to compete and train against the best world's best freeskiers with your brother beside you.

''It's awesome to have Nico with me. Sometimes it's definitely tough training and competing all the time and you're always having to push yourself and it's great to have your brother alongside you to help,'' Miguel said.

''We both get quite nervous before tricks so it's great to feed off each other and get better.''

Both are hoping to qualify for the finals of the Winter Games Freeski World Cup Halfpipe competition starting today at the Cardrona Alpine Resort.

At the previous Winter Games in 2015 the brothers were unable to compete: Miguel because of injury and Nico because he was too young - not that it stopped him trying.

''Yeah, we tried to sneak me in. That almost worked but right at the top of the course they pulled me out, but no problems this time. I'm 100% legally in the competition.''

Being the youngest competitor at most of the elite competitions does not seem to faze the 15-year-old.

''I don't really see age as a factor. If you're strong and confident in your skiing you can do anything, I guess. Age is just a number.''

The brothers have already secured two places for New Zealand at the Winter Olympics and now have five months to show the New Zealand Olympic selectors they are worthy of taking those spots in February.

''So it's all about staying uninjured and using this as a launchpad for the next five months, but I'm still going to go hard and compete. You always want to put on your best show at home, Miguel said.

Earlier this year, Miguel won silver at the X-Games in Colorado and Nico finished eighth at a world cup competition at the same venue in South Korea where the Winter Olympics will be held, so both are in top form.

Competing alongside the brothers will be fellow Wanaka competitor Beau-James Wells, one of the four Wells brothers.

The 2014 Olympian is returning from injury and will be trying to prove he is back to his old form against the best in the world.

Another Wanaka local and 2014 Olympian Janina Kuzma will line up against a strong field in the women's halfpipe competition.

''The comp is going to be amazing. We've got the strongest field for the Winter Games. I'm really excited it's going show who's tracking in the lead-up to the Winter Olympics.

''It's exciting to have a full-on world cup in New Zealand at Cardrona.''

After a mixed season last year, Kuzma said she would use the Winter Games as a platform for the next five months in the lead-up to the Winter Olympics.

''Last season was a really tough season for me. We tried to change my run up a bit and at some comps it didn't work very well and sometimes it did and I had a few big crashes which really hurt my confidence.

''But I'm tracking well and I'm stoked even on a bad day I can go up and throw my run down and those tricks aren't going to bother me this time around.''

Qualifying for the men's and women's Freeski World Cup Halfpipe competition starts today with the finals being held tomorrow at the Cardrona Alpine Resort.
