Kiwi medal hopes were dashed again today by shock loses in rugby and more delays to the rowing.

Still smarting from the shock loss to Japan, the Sevens side was outclassed by top seeds Fiji. The clash with New Zealand was an encounter that many thought would take place in the final.

Depleted by injuries to Sonny Bill Williams, Joe Webber and Scott Curry, the 12-times world series champions sneaked into the last eight when Fiji beat the US in the opening round. The Kiwis were earlier beaten by Great Britain in their final pool match.

Both Black Sticks hockey sides impressed. The men trounced home country Brazil 9-0 in their penultimate pool match, while the women had a tougher time in their match against Spain, eventually winning  2-1.

High winds again forced the Olympic rowing regatta to be called off, with waves crashing over boats in the early morning training session.

Several eagerly-anticipated contests been scheduled including the  lightweight women's double sculls semi with New Zealand, China and South Africa set to do battle.

In the pool, Michael Phelps was closing in on more Games glory, the American making the final of the 200m individual medley.
