Netball: Jury still out for Southby on new rules

Different but the same. That is the verdict of New Zealand under-21 coach Janine Southby after watching some of the world netball series in Manchester over the weekend.

The jury is still out for Southby, who questioned whether the new rules had made any difference.

"I don't think it changed the way things happen on the court hugely," she said when contacted for comment.

"The biggest change was seeing shooters attempt to score from outside the circle.

"But I think the concept of having six international teams playing in a tournament over three days is the exciting part of it."

New Zealand struggled early on in the tournament before bouncing back to claim the title.

It lost to England 24-21 in its opening match and was also beaten 25-22 by Australia.

"It was interesting watching the players because I don't think they have really adapted that well to the concept.

"The first few games, no-one was really shooting from out there.

"I didn't really notice the rolling substitutions either."

It is too early to say whether the format will take off, but Southby said she would be concerned if the new rules filtered into the longer version of the game.

On the positive side, the shortened game could appeal to some people who would not normally watch netball.

It has also reduced the gaps between the top two or three nations and the rest of the world.

Malawi pushed the Silver Ferns hard before normal service eventually resumed, with the New Zealand side winning 27-22.

"When a team settles into its rhythm, that's when they really start pulling away and the gaps start blowing out," Southby said, adding there was less room for mismatches when the game was just 24min long.

The rules could see some nations or players emerge as specialists as in sevens, where teams like Fiji and Kenya do well in the shortened code but struggle in rugby.

Former Silver Ferns coach Yvonne Willering has just returned from a coaching assignment in South Africa and did not see the series.

However, she thought some of the new rules sounded gimmicky and was not convinced they were the way forward for the game.
