Netball: Broughton cagey on goal attack selection

Southern Steel coach Robyn Broughton faces a dilemma with her squad back to full strength for its crucial match against the Northern Mystics in Auckland tonight.

Former Australian defender Megan Dehn returns from an ankle injury but that has created a selection headache at goal attack for Broughton, not that the shrewd coach would admit it.

In Dehn's absence, 18-year-old shooter Julianna Naoupu has made a name for herself.

Two weeks, ago the youngster calmly slotted the match-winning goal against the Melbourne Vixens and was steady in the 15-goal demolition of the West Coast Fever last week.

Her efforts were good enough to hold off former Silver Ferns shooter-turned-television presenter Tania Dalton, who was called into the squad as cover for Dehn.

But when Broughton was asked whether Naoupu or Dehn would partner Daneka Wipiiti in the shooting circle, the coach was not about to undermine the surprise.

"Both of them are in the team," she said.

"It is just the same as any other time when you have to decide who goes on," she responded, when pressed further.

Naoupu's form has been a bonus for the Steel.

Her combination with Wipiiti has given the team a two-pronged attack.

Dehn's role was that of a provider with Wipiiti playing the holding game.

But with Naoupu not as mobile as Dehn, Wipiiti has played a more expansive game moving further from the hoop in search of the ball.

It is a tactic which has worked well in Dehn's absence and has helped get the Steel's campaign back on course.

A loss tonight could derail the Steel's play-off hopes.

The last time the sides met it was the Mystics who escaped Stadium Southland with a narrow win.

The Steel led by as many as eight goals but was overrun in the final period.

However, Broughton believes her side has improved markedly since that match.

"All the teams have improved but we've got to know one another better and are sticking to the game plan."

The Mystics have had a run of bad luck in recent weeks.

They suffered a one-goal loss to the Adelaide Thunderbirds in round 11 after a questionable penalty in the final moments allowed the visitors to slot the winner.

In round 10, the Mystics were convinced there was more time left in the match when the umpires sounded the final whistle with the the score 63-62 in the Swifts' favour.

The Mystics cannot make the play-offs but righting those perceived wrongs is sure to be part of the motivation.

With a talented line-up which includes the likes of Vilimaina Davu, Leana de Bruin, Sheryl Scanlan and Temepara George, the Steel will have to be at its best.

The Magic strengthened its position at the top of the ANZ Championship with a 46-41 win over the Central Pulse in Wellington on Saturday, and the Melbourne Vixens held off a brave challenge from the West Coast Fever in Perth to win 54-48.

Yesterday, the Queensland Firebirds beat the Canterbury Tactix 50-36 in Brisbane.
