The Queensland Firebirds are doing what they can to help lift people's spirits following recent devastating floods in the state.

Most of the team were affected in some way, even if it was simply not being able to practice, so the franchise has decided to donate some of the proceeds from ticket sales from its opening ANZ Championship match to the flood relief fund in Rockhampton.

Defender Laura Geitz said the netball association in the northern Queensland city "went under" and four Firebirds players are heading there tomorrow to run a netball clinic and raise funds.

"We are keen to do whatever we can to help people get back on with their lives," Geitz said.

The towering goal keep was in Jamaica with the Australian team when the floods hit Brisbane.

She lives on the third level of an apartment block 8km east of the city centre.

The area was "definitely in the flood zone" but the newly engaged netballer's home escaped damage.

"We were actually on tour in Jamaica at the time so I wasn't there when it was all happening. But I was getting constant updates from my partner and it wasn't nice.

"By the time we flew back in I was really surprised, because I thought there would have been a lot more water laying around than what there was."

Australian and Firebirds team-mate Lauren Nourse lives just down the road.

She got a call from her neighbour and was told her house needing sandbagging.

It was distressing to be out of the country with a crisis at home.

But Geitz said the community had rallied.

"We went for a drive through the worst-affected areas and the clean-up process is going well. You can tell there has been a flood but it is a whole lot different."

The venue the Firebirds train at was used as an evacuation centre during the worst days of the flooding.
