Motorsport: Yes it's a tough job, but somebody has to do it

V8 SuperTourer driver Andrew Waite has a tough job at Highlands Motorsport Park.

He spends his week days doing hot laps around the Cromwell circuit in a Porsche GT3 and Porsche Cayenne.

But in the weekends, he really draws the short straw - he has to take paying customers for spins in Highlands owner Tony Quinn's Lamborghini Superleggera.

''It's horrible,'' Waite (24), the official Highlands Motorsport Park professional driver, says with a laugh.

In 2012, Waite won the final V8 SuperTourer race of the season, partnering Daniel Gaunt.

He was also NZ V8 ute champion in 2011-12, has had wins in the Toyota Racing Series and Australian Formula 3, was the Formula Ford rookie of the year in 2006-2007, and was a New Zealand kart champion.

His credentials plus his personable nature secured him the Cromwell role earlier this year.

In his spare time, he has just picked up a drive with Tasman Motorsport Group, in the V8 SuperTourers Championship.

They missed the first two rounds due to lack of sponsorship but raced last month at Pukekohe and will line up their Ford on the grid again this weekend.
