Motorsport: Podiums for Dunedin trio

Three Dunedin drivers achieved podium placings at KartSport New Zealand's annual South Island sprint championship title meetings over Labour Weekend.

Competing at KartSport Southland's raceway at Invercargill's Sandy Point Domain, Joshua King was the top results earner, winning the 100cc Yamaha heavy class.

Fellow Dunedin competitor Daniel Harvey was second behind him and finished in the same position in the 125cc Rotax Max heavy class.

Josh Bethune, of Dunedin, got some good seat time before his trip to Las Vegas next month to compete as the only New Zealand youngster in the cadet class at the Superkarts USA supernationals.

He won the pre-final in the cadet class and then placed third in the final behind Laura McPherson and her fellow Christchurch driver, Jacob Mitchell, who claimed his third consecutive South Island title.

The following day, Josh (10) changed his licence and raced in the junior restricted class for 10 to 14-year-olds, where he finished fourth overall.

He leaves for the United States in two weeks and will carry out some testing in San Francisco before heading to Las Vegas for five days of competition in a category that caters for 9 to 12-year-olds.

The South Island title event was held simultaneously with the North Island sprint championship in Upper Hutt.

Both meetings were held in cool, changeable weather. Rain affected qualifying and the first heats at the North Island event on Friday and the first heats at the South Island event on Saturday.
