He is only 8 but already a national champion.

And he is quick with it.

Regan Turner, of Brighton, won the ages 7-8 65cc class at the New Zealand mini motocross national championships near Reefton during the weekend.

The youngster, who will have to double his age before he hopes to be able to drive on the road legally, is already proving pretty adept on two wheels off the road.

It was a close-run thing on the course during the weekend but Regan's consistent racing won him the title.

Racing against more than a dozen other riders he gained two victories, two second placings and a third in the five races contested, to win the grade from Turangi's Bailey Hardwidge, with Walton's Brodie Connolly finishing third.

His coach and father, Deane Turner, said Regan first started riding when he was 5 and took to it like duck to water.

"I didn't pressure him into it. I told him he could do anything he wants but he wanted to ride bikes and he's dead keen. When we have to go anywhere he's always up half an hour before me keen to get going," he said.

His skills on the bike may be in the genes, as his cousin is Palmerston rider Courtney Duncan, who has cleaned up in every age group she has entered.

Regan, a pupil at Columba College, had nice balance on the bike and showed no fear.

Despite his age it was deadly serious and there was plenty of competition between the young riders.

It was also a sport where travelling was a fact of life. This season he and his father had been to Auckland, Woodville and New Plymouth, and across the Tasman to ride at the Australian championships near Adelaide where Regan finished 13th in the open 65cc category.

He turns 9 next year and will move up to the 85cc category.
