Ice hockey: Sides share the honours

The Dunedin Thunder and the Southern Stampede shared the honours during two pre-season games in Dunedin at the weekend.

The Thunder comprehensively outplayed its Queenstown rival on Saturday with a 4-0 win.

New Canadian import Kolten Fyfe scored his first goal for the Thunder, and Tristan Darling, Matt Enright and Ben Gavoille also got on the scoreboard in a slick display.

The Stampede, which had been a bit frantic in the opening game, responded in the best way possible with a 6-3 win on Sunday.

The visiting side scored first but the Thunder responded with two goals in the second period to make it 2-2 with 20 minutes remaining.

The Stampede finished strongly, winning the final period 4-1 to seal an impressive victory.

Among the scorers for the Stampede were Frear brothers Cameron and Lachlan, and Mike McRae. Fyfe, Darling and Paris Heyd replied for the Thunder.

The Stampede opens its national league campaign against the Canterbury Red Devils in Christchurch on June 7. The Thunder gets under way a week later with a fixture against the Botany Swarm, in Auckland.
