Hockey: University struggles to win

University Blue will need to improve if it wants to win the premier men's title this year after scraping a 2-1 win over Kings United on Saturday.

University held on to a one-goal lead for most of the second half to secure the win. Kings had several chances to equalise but let simple mistakes cost it a goal.

Kings' closest attempt was from a penalty corner. James Nation beat the keeper but Tom Clarkson pulled off a great save.

University was the first to score in the 10th minute when Chris Ashton took advantage of sloppy defence by Kings, allowing Ashton to flick the ball over the goalie.

Kings replied straight away, when Nation scored with a drag flick from a penalty corner.

The umpires were given a lot of advice from players on both sides, leading to a warning for University and Kings having a player sin-binned for back chat from the reserves.

With one man down just before halftime, the Kings defenders stepped up to keep University away from the goal.

University came out of the break firing and and Ashton got involved again to score an easy goal to give University its 2-1 lead.

In the other premier one game, Albany A beat City Highlanders 6-0.
