Actually, the men's team is setting the pace at the national under-21 tournament in Whangarei.
With three wins from three games, Southern has breezed into the top four. But things get more serious with a match against Midlands today and Auckland tomorrow.
Southern carries four points into the final four courtesy of its 1-0 win against Canterbury. Auckland also has four points in the bank, with Midlands and Canterbury on the back foot with no points. The top two teams after the next two rounds will contest Saturday's final.
Southern coach Callum Bailey believes his side has the personnel to win the title.
''We've improved as we've gone through the tournament and managed to close out a tight game against Canterbury, which was satisfying,'' Bailey said.
''Midlands and Auckland are really strong teams but we are confident we have the team to go through and win the tournament.''
Bailey said Black Sticks drag-flick specialist Kane Russell had been in good form. Strikers Jeremy Morris and Lachie Davidson had provided some quality finishing, while midfielders Nick Elder and Rob Paterson had been pillars of strength.
The Otago Daily Times incorrectly reported both the Southern men and Southern women had lost their opening games when, in fact, they had both won. The women have also made it through to the top four and play North Harbour today and Auckland tomorrow.
Southern carries one point through to the final four thanks to a draw with Canterbury. Canterbury won the shootout, though, so it takes an extra point into the final four. Auckland has set the pace with three wins and takes four points through, while North Harbour will start from scratch.
Southern women's coach Dave Ross said Auckland looked the side to beat.
''Last year, it was an Auckland-Canterbury final and that is where the majority of all the junior and senior Black Sticks come from,'' Ross said.
''North Harbour are an experienced group with good pace and it will be a tough game. We'll have to be at our best.''
