Hockey: Second-half burst by University men

University Blue turned around a slow start to demolish City Highlanders 7-1 in premier one men's hockey on Saturday.

With the scores tied at the break, it looked as if City might cause an upset, but University scored six goals in the second half.

University was the first to score when Chris Ashton beat the City defenders and passed to Aaron Farrell.

Just as it had a week earlier, University dropped its guard and immediately let City back into the game, with a goal to Dominic Melchers who recovered a loose ball in front of the goal.

Gritty defence from City saw the teams go in to the half tied 1-1.

University took a couple of extra minutes in the dressing room before taking the field for the second half, which seemed to help the team lift its game.

Once the second goal was scored, the flood gates opened and another five goals came in 20 minutes.

University players to shine were Damien Watson, Richard Storey, and Farrell and Ashton, who each scored two goals.

City seemed shocked at the pace of University's play and by the time it recovered, the game was all but over, with University winning 7-1.

University will meet Albany next week in a top-of-the-table clash.

In another premier one game, Albany A beat Kings United 5-0.
