Otago has been dealt a severe blow on the eve of its campaign to win this year’s national interprovincial title with the withdrawal of No4 Inia Logan due to a chest infection.

Logan (18) contacted selection convener Jason Hughes yesterday morning and withdrew, citing his health problems which left him  with no energy.

He won three of his four games in the South Island team event on the Otatara course in Invercargill two weeks ago but fell ill on his return to Cromwell after the event.

"I am on antibiotics but remain very tired and have not been able to get to the course for practice since the South Island event," Logan said.Logan has built up a promising dossier in recent months with the highlight making the final of the Queensland amateur championship two months ago.

His withdrawal elevates reserve Chris Snow (St Clair) to No5, the  position he has played with success for the past two years.

Michael Ormandy (Otago) missed selection and was to travel as team manager but will now double as the team’s reserve.

Having finished fourth in 2013 and runner-up for the past three years, this Otago team is focused on going one step further this year.

Michael Smith will now return to No4, a position which led to his best interprovincial  record in New Plymouth last year.

The remaining players will retain their selected positions with Fraser MacLachlan at No1, Brandon Hodgson at No2 and newly restored amateur Duncan Croudis at No3.

The tournament tees off in Whangarei next Tuesday.
