Otago had mixed fortunes on the first day of the women's national interprovincial with a win and a loss on the Sherwood Park course in Whangarei yesterday.

Otago lost the initiative on the homeward journey against Hawkes Bay in the morning finishing with three losses and two halves.

But in a reversal of form, Otago posted three convincing margins over Southland in the afternoon, eventually winning 3.5-1.5.

Waikato and Northland were the only teams to post two wins yesterday while Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Canterbury each had one convincing win and a bye.

In the morning, the top Otago players turned 1-up while Abigael Crawford trailed by two and 12-year-old Sumin Kang was all but beaten turning seven behind. But Hawkes Bay finished strongly with Lauree Southerden winning 10 and 11 to lead Susan Greig and the pair halved the final seven holes.

No 1 Danielle Bailey was also in command at 3-up at one stage but Bay's Jaimie McIvor came home strongly to snatch the half.

Annabel Evans had the best chance of winning at dormie two up but wayward drives cost her on the final two holes.

In the afternoon, the Otago tail wagged with Greig and Crawford blitzing their opponents to both win 6 and 5.

It was a turnaround for Kang, who led Southland No5 Kate McGregor all the way in a match which finished with four holes to spare.

Otago No1 Bailey had a close tussle with Angela Gerken in a match which was tied up at every check point and finished all square.
