The team went down by 1½ to 3½ to North Harbour in the morning but lost all five games to Manawatu-Whanganui in the afternoon.
This gives Otago no points and three games after the first four rounds with four more rounds to get on the scoreboard.
But the going might even get tougher this morning when Otago meets a strong Auckland quintet which won the title at Chisholm Links last year.
In the morning, Otago No 3 Simon Hollyer was the only winner, beating Rob Simmonds by 3 and 2 after making a strong start.
Andrew Hobbs (No 1) contributed once again after finding himself dormie one ahead but his final tee shot finished behind a tree and he had to be satisfied halving with Stuart Nichol.
But it was downhill from that point, with Stephen Hitchcox and Gary Creedy both losing close contests.
Ken Shaw (No 4) took time out in the morning, giving reserve Kevin Clark his first game, but he suffered at the hands of Harbour golfer Wayne Flatham's hot putter.
In the afternoon, Hitchcox stood down, but Manawatu-Whanganui was too strong, posting two 5 and 4 and one 4 and 3 margins.
After Auckland this morning, Otago is likely to have an easier day tomorrow against Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay-East Coast.
The team's final match is against 2014 winner Northland. It has a bye in the final round on Friday afternoon.
