It has been a hectic sporting week for Ben Patston, mixing the small round balls and clubs with the oval ball and the rucks and mauls.

Patston (31) yesterday won the national left-handed tournament, hitting through the fog at Chisholm Park to finish with a 69 for the day, his best round of the week.

That was backing up from a game of rugby on Wednesday night and a week  during which he has barely seen his family.

He played rugby for the Green Island premier side against Dunedin last Saturday and then played pennants golf on Sunday in the pouring rain.

On Monday he lined up for the first round of the tournament at Chisholm Park and also went to rugby training at which the side had a light run.

Another 18 holes followed on Tuesday and then there was golf and rugby, playing first five-eighth against a rugged University side, at Miller Park on Wednesday.

Yesterday, admittedly with a sore Achilles and a back that could have been better, he managed to wander around the course and ended up a convincing winner.

"It’s been a long week. But I just wanted to help the [Green Island] boys out. I managed to even make a couple of tackles on Wednesday," Patston said.

"But really I have to thank my wife. She is the star, really. I’ve got three young kids and I can go out and do this because of them.

"I probably should be in the dog box but she is great. A real cool Kiwi chick."

Wife Lisa and children Mischa (9), Leo (5) and Freddy (3) were all supportive — and that helped his game.Patston, a sales consultant with Mediaworks, and a scratch golfer, wants  to go further in his golf game.

Rugby, though,  is still a passion. He had played for four years at Southern but with young players coming through at the Magpies decided to head further afield.

"I have just missed the camaraderie in rugby, just getting around the guys. There is a great spirit out there. They were lining the fields and still cheering us on, even when we were 40 points down. It’s not what you’d expect."

Patston, who hails from England,  came out here to play in North Otago in 2010, said Green Island just needed to get across the line more  which would be reward for  its possession.

He  will  have today off before picking up his golf clubs tomorrow for a senior match at the Otago Golf Club. Green Island  will have to do without him when it takes on Harbour at Miller Park on Saturday.

Patston, who has also played senior cricket for Green Island, had goals in golf and ultimately it  is to play in the Toro tournament.

"That is what I want to do. Last year I was  No10 in the 10-man squad. This year I hope to make the eight-man squad. But you’ve got to be playing pretty consistently and playing in all the events."
