The Chisholm Links golf course has drawn rave reviews - although a bit more water would not hurt.

Many of the professionals spoke highly of the course over the past two days at the New Zealand Legends Masters.

Guy Wall, who finished third, was one to add his voice to that of Peter Fowler and Greg Turner in offering high praise for the course.

``I just love this golf course. I love links golf and this is pure links,'' Wall said.

``From the moment I got here I said to myself, `this is a hidden treasure. Why doesn't everybody know about this place?'

``The golf course is unbelievable. It just needs money, but I really enjoyed the course.''

Bryan Wearne offered similar praise and has some quality courses to compare it to.

``I come from the Mornington Peninsula area just south of Melbourne, which is famous for brilliant golf courses.

``And this is very similar, same type of dry, so I was sort of at home.

``It's a fantastic piece of landscape.

``When you mix that with the weather conditions you have on the coast, that just makes it very interesting.''

Adri Verbakel had similar thoughts, adding that it was ``extremely enjoyable'' to play.

However, the dry fairways were noted.

The issue of grey water has been a big one for the club and it has been undergoing testing to get approval to use it on its fairways.

That testing is ongoing.

At present, only the tees and greens can be watered, meaning a dry summer made for dry fairways.

The Dunedin City Council, which owns the land, had wanted to ensure the grey water - treated water from the Tahuna waste water treatment plant - was both safe for humans and beneficial for the grass.

Runner-up Mike Harwood was one who threw his support behind the grey water concept, particularly given the ease of access.

``Obviously, the council doesn't look after the golf course very well.

``The greens were fantastic, so the greenkeeper did a great job after the weather they've had, so five stars for him.

``But the council obviously need to have a look at themselves when they've got an effluent plant next door which could look after the golf course, instead of pumping it offshore.

``I think they need to have a good hard look at themselves.''

Wall agreed that some water on the fairways would be ``awesome'', although that had not taken away from the enjoyment of playing the course.
