Golf: NZ lefties shine at world championships

Left-handed golfers came to the fore during last week's World Left-Handed Golf Championships in Queenstown, walking away with the Open title and the Doug Crosbie World Cup.

Championship spokeswoman Nicola Cull said the scores from the top three golfers from each country over the week were tallied and the team with the highest score was awarded the cup.

This year that honour went to New Zealand.

New Zealand's Brian Cronin won the Left-Handed Open title, while Japan's Teruko Yatsushiro won the Ladies' title.

In the Seniors (55+) division, Brodie Baker, of the United States, was named the winner, with Australia's Barry Ewert winning the Super Seniors' (70+) title.

Ms Cull said the 295 players from 10 countries had been playing on courses at Millbrook, Kelvin Heights, Arrowtown and Jacks Point since last Sunday and feedback had been brilliant.

‘‘They put the limit at 400 [golfers], but I think it was probably better that the did only get 300.

‘‘It worked well and it was a nice split of people from different countries.

‘‘Everyone enjoyed it, especially the ones from overseas.

‘‘They just loved New Zealand and Queenstown and they thought it was a beautiful place,'' she said.

While the world championships are normally held every second year, they will next take place in Sweden in 2009.
